Mission

The Karoussos Archives, a century-long cultural archive, has taught us how culture has the power to shape our society by influencing change. We translate our cultural heritage into action, promoting sustainable development and social progress. We engage in various forms of social service, outreach programmes, and advocacy work based on our cultural heritage and tailoring them to our present demands. By reflecting on the past and embracing today's advancements, we can build a thriving future for future generations.

Our History

The Karousos family has a remarkable legacy of using monumental art to bring about social change. For three generations, they have been pioneers in Orthodox monumental painting, by raising public awareness and inspiring positive change.

Ten years after the passing of the late painter Yannis Karoussos, the Karousos Archives, led by President Katerina Karousos, revived the Chapel of Saint Spyridon in Verga, Messinian Mani, Peloponnese, Greece. The Chapel now stands out as a remarkable example of innovative cultural heritage regeneration on a global scale.

Based on the Chapel's regeneration, the Karousos Archives develops the required conditions for its reintegration into the modern social context. Following extensive research, a new type of Diakonia (ministry) emerged that can respond to contemporary problems such as climate change and the humanitarian crisis.

Our new type of Diakonia has shaped our mission to raise awareness and promote positive change. The Karoussos Cultural Diakonia is dedicated to making a positive impact on the world by addressing challenges through the combination of our cultural heritage and modern approaches.

Our Approach

Culture is not just about traditions and art; it's a powerful force shaping how we interact with the environment, each other, and the economy. By recognizing the contributions of culture to sustainability, we can build a more just and equitable future for all.

Culture plays a powerful role in all three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. Here's how:

Environmental Sustainability:

  • Values and Practices: Cultures with traditions of respecting nature, using resources wisely, and living in harmony with the environment are more likely to adopt sustainable practices. Indigenous knowledge about local ecosystems can be invaluable.

  • Traditional Techniques: Many cultures have developed methods for sustainable agriculture, water management, and renewable energy use that can be adapted to modern contexts.

  • Community Action: Cultural events and initiatives can raise awareness about environmental issues and mobilize communities to take action, such as planting trees, reducing waste, or conserving water.

Social Sustainability:

  • Shared Values: Culture fosters a sense of community and shared identity, which can encourage cooperation and social cohesion. This is crucial for addressing social challenges like poverty and inequality.

  • Diversity and Inclusion: A vibrant and inclusive culture respects and celebrates diversity. This fosters social justice and empowers different groups within society to contribute to a more sustainable future.

  • Education and Transmission of Knowledge: Culture transmits traditional knowledge, skills, and values from generation to generation. This can include sustainable practices, conflict resolution techniques, and social norms that promote wellbeing.

Economic Sustainability:

  • Creative Industries: A thriving cultural sector with museums, art, music, and festivals generates jobs, attracts tourism, and boosts the economy. Cultural tourism can be a significant source of revenue for many communities.

  • Innovation and Design: Culture fosters creativity and innovation, which can lead to the development of new sustainable technologies, products, and services.

  • Local Economies: Supporting local artisans, craftspeople, and cultural producers strengthens local economies and promotes social and environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on long-distance transportation.

Our Model

Cultural principles are woven into the very fabric of sustainable development. Byzantine culture offers a fascinating model for understanding the complexities of sustainable development. By studying their strengths and weaknesses, we can gain valuable lessons for building a more sustainable future based on our cultural heritage.

Environmental Sustainability:
A mixed record

  • Agriculture: Byzantine agriculture relied on sustainable practices, such as crop rotation, composting, and reforestation, ensuring the long-term productivity of the soil.

  • Forestry: The empire implemented strict regulations for logging and forest protection, recognizing their importance in preventing erosion and maintaining biodiversity.

  • Water Resources: The construction of dams, aqueducts, and irrigation systems enabled effective water management, ensuring access to water for agriculture and domestic use.

  • Waste Management: The collection and treatment of waste was a priority, with sewage systems and landfills that prevented environmental pollution.

  • Use of Renewable Energy Sources: The empire utilized natural energy sources such as solar and hydraulic power for buildings and industrial facilities, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Social Sustainability:
A Shared Identity

  • Shared Identity: The continuation of the Ancient Greek and Roman culture in Byzantine civilisation, fostered a sense of shared history and cultural identity for a diverse population.

  • Orthodoxy: Eastern Orthodoxy acted as a unifying force, transcending ethnic and social divisions. Religious festivals and beliefs promoted a sense of community.

  • Social Construction of Meaning: Culture was used to construct social meaning. For example, stories and images of people, and actions were used for political and social interpretations.

  • Civil Rights: A social paradigm that has survived in the modern world and influenced prominent leaders. The American Civil Rights Movement saw significant participation from Christian leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., who used their faith to advocate for racial equality.

  • Activism: Christianity has a rich tradition of activism, rooted in its core values of social justice and compassion.

Economic Sustainability: A fluid system

Importance of Agriculture:

  • The foundation of the Byzantine economy was agriculture. Fertile lands in Anatolia, Egypt, and the Balkans produced grains, olives, wine, and other crops.

Thriving Trade:

  • Constantinople, the capital, was a major trade hub linking East and West. Byzantine merchants traded with Europe, Asia, and Africa, exchanging goods like silk, spices, textiles, and luxury items.

  • The state actively encouraged trade through infrastructure development and trade agreements with other countries.

 Guild System:

  • Artisans and skilled workers were organized into guilds. These guilds regulated production standards, prices, and competition within specific crafts.

 Evolving System:

  • The Byzantine economy wasn't static. It adapted and changed throughout the empire's history. For example, after the Arab conquests in the 7th century, the empire focused more on internal trade and production.

Our Vision

In a time of rapid change and fluid boundaries, the concept of integrating different fields into our social agenda is becoming increasingly important. The shift towards a more holistic approach, as shown in Byzantine culture, which considers the interrelationship of environment, art, technology, and spirit, is crucial in tackling modern-day difficulties and creating a more sustainable and humane future. A brighter future is possible if we embrace the great components of our cultural past and combine them with fresh approaches.

By fostering understanding, empowering communities, and mobilizing resources, we plan to do the following:

Environmental Sustainability

  • Promotion of sustainable practices in the maintenance and restoration of monuments.

  • Support research focusing on Byzantine culture.

  • Integration of environmental values into education and public awareness.

  • Green fundraising initiatives

Social Sustainability

  • Promotion of social justice and equality through education and culture.

  • Support for cultural programs that empower vulnerable groups.

  • Promotion of intercultural understanding and respect for diversity.

Our Visionary Projects

Cultural principles are woven into the very fabric of sustainable development. Byzantine culture offers a fascinating model for understanding the complexities of sustainable development. By studying their strengths and weaknesses, we can gain valuable lessons for building a more sustainable future based on our cultural heritage.

The Sustainable Village Initiative

The project fosters a sense of cultural continuity while embracing modern environmental solutions. It leverages the Byzantine legacy of community spirit, skilled craftsmanship, and artistic expression to create a sustainable future for Verga village, where St.Spyridon Chapel and Karoussos Center are located.

Our goal is to make the local area of Verga a model for future projects focusing on sustainable development scenarios.

Through innovative work and creative reintegration, we resurrect the artistic grandeur of these abandoned monuments, ensuring their service to the modern context. It's time to reclaim our heritage, not just preserve it.
